Visit the Former Convent of San Antonio de Padua

Under the supervision of Fray Diego de Landa, this sanctuary is one of the oldest in Mexico, since the work was completed in 1561.Many do not know it, but it is the second largest atrium in the world, only after St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. In addition, it was built on the ruins of a pre-Hispanic temple, a building that the natives knew as Pap-Hol-Chac.

Inside the temple there is a beautiful Baroque style altarpiece, covered with gold plating. And at the top, there is a museum dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.

Get to know the Market

There are squares surrounding the Former Convent of San Antonio, the first, located to the north, is the Plaza Zamna. Here you will find street stalls selling souvenirs, ice cream, sweets and guides who can advise you on your adventure through Izamal.

To one side is the Municipal Market, a showcase of local products. This place is ideal for having breakfast and trying Yucatecan cuisine.

Travel its Archeology Route

Izamal also bears the name "The city of the hills" because it has a large number of Mayan vestiges.

In the spaces that many of the pyramids had previously occupied, today various buildings, mansions and churches have been placed. However, when they were demolished, many chose to preserve the materials as a basis for new constructions.

There are at least 6 specimens that make up the Zamná Route, which you can explore on a horse-drawn carriage or walking on your own.

The Kinich Kakmó pyramid is an impressive construction that offers panoramic views of the entire town and its surroundings.
